Gas Safe Register · Safety Alert SA-013

The most dangerous boiler in Britain is still in thousands of South Wales homes.

It is called the Powermax. The UK gas safety regulator issued an official alert about it. It can leak carbon monoxide you cannot see, smell or taste. If one is sitting in your cupboard, you need to know today.

Have you got one?

You will know it by these four things

  • It stands on the floor, it is not hung on the wall
  • It is boxed into a kitchen, utility or airing cupboard
  • It is badged Baxi, Potterton or Range Powermax
  • Your home was built or fitted out in the 1990s or early 2000s
  • If that is the boiler in your cupboard, read the next bit carefully.
The evidence

The gas safety regulator issued an alert about this boiler

Gas Safe Register · Safety Alert SA-013Issued 15 Nov 2013
Subject: Potterton Powermax, flue / condensate connector erosion
“Under fault conditions increased levels of carbon monoxide can be created and escape from the flue/condensate connector component.”
The manufacturer offered a free replacement connector to every affected boiler. Many were never done, and those boilers are still running today. Read the alert on the Gas Safe Register
Why it is a silent killer

Four things go wrong. Together they kill.

Carbon monoxide has no colour, no smell and no taste. Your body gives you no warning. Here is exactly how a Powermax lets it into your home.

The gas valve drifts

The valve settings wander out of tune as the unit ages. Adjusted without a flue gas analyser, a Powermax can produce carbon monoxide in vast quantities.

The burner gasket leaks

The manufacturer says it must be replaced every single time the burner is removed. Genuine gaskets are now almost impossible to get, so units are put back together without one, and combustion gases escape into the room.

The flue corrodes from the inside

Acidic condensate eats through the aluminium twin-tube flue until it goes porous. Then it leaks.

And the flue is hidden

It runs through ceilings, walls and boxed-in voids. So when it leaks, it leaks straight into your living space, with nothing to see and nothing to smell.

And you cannot just fix it

This is why most engineers will not touch one

The parts are gone. The thermal store, the valves, the gaskets and the flue components are obsolete. There may simply be nothing left to repair it with.

It cannot be safely tuned. The flue test point sits outside, so one engineer cannot read the combustion while adjusting the valve inside.

An alarm is not a fix. A carbon monoxide alarm screams once the gas is already in the room. Fit one today, but it does nothing about a leaking flue.

There is only one way to make it safe. Take it out.

Three steps, and it is out of your house
